David Astle's Gargantuan Book of Words
I knew I wanted goldfinches on the cover - a charm of them. Gold is this book's main colour: Jackie has used gold-leaf throughout to give a magical sheen to her images - they have shades of medieval illuminated manuscripts, or of Russian icons. So it seemed right to have goldfinches - goldies, as they're affectionately known - shimmering across the front of the book.
How does the cover design relate to what you both set out to do in creating the book? For weasel, read Weedle; for peewit, read Pikachu.
So, as the virtual world has moved decisively to the centre of childhood experience, our 'spell-book' is an attempt to enchant nearby nature again, much as Cicely Mary Barker's Flower Fairies taught generations of children the names and habits of our plants and flowers. We wanted it to be quite unlike any other book that exists: to catch at the beauty and wonder - but also the eeriness and otherness - of the natural world.
So the cover needed somehow to speak of this strangeness, too, rather than trying to mimic an existing style. All over the country, there are words disappearing from children's lives. These are the words of the natural world - Dandelion, Otter, Bramble and Acorn, all gone. The rich landscape of wild imagination and wild play is rapidly fading from our children's minds. The Lost Words stands against the disappearance of wild childhood.
It is a joyful celebration of nature words and the natural world they invoke. With acrostic spell-poems by award-winning writer Robert Macfarlane and hand-painted illustration by Jackie Morris, this enchanting book captures the irreplaceable magic of language and nature for all ages. Both books have been adapted for television by the BBC. Jackie Morris grew up in the Vale of Evesham, dreaming of becoming an artist and living by the sea. She collaborated with Ted Hughes, and her books have sold more than a million copies worldwide.
Jackie now lives in a cottage on the cliffs of Pembrokeshire, which she shares with a small pride of cats and various other gentle creatures. For the latest books, recommendations, offers and more. I particularly like the alphabet sequence with its circus theme. Much thought has clearly gone in to making this a distinctive book of its type. Children are sure to enjoy it, and learn from it, over many years. A hugely enjoyable and imagination-expanding book which will enable young children to talk about all the things in their world and their feelings about them. The Source, October — November 8, This large format board book introduces a range of words that interest young people, along with amusing illustrations of animal parents and children demonstrating the meaning of the words.
Thus two children eating biscuits drop crumbs which are sucked up by a vacuum cleaner. Words linked to clothes, homes, seasons, work, food, animals, and activities are neatly assembled on the large pages with witty drawings. There are even small jokes for parents. A sequence of pictures of wheeled transport recapitulates the ages of man or, in this case, stork as pram, pushchair, running bike, scooter, bicycle, motorcycle, car, walking stick, walker and wheelchair.
Look very carefully on every page and you will find there is a story told — encourage older children to retell the story using the clues in the pictures — a great way to encourage creative thinking and writing.
